Windsurfing gear
There is a surprising amount of windsurfing gear necessary to successfully windsurf. You have the extreme basics, the board, a mast, a boom, the sails, and of course you, the rider. But there is so much more that goes into it than that! You have a harness, to connect yourself to the board. You have fins, which help you adjust your board to different wind conditions. There are pulleys and tethers and ropes, and oh yea, a helmet if you plan on doing anything interesting out there.
Because much of windsurfing gear is condition specific, it becomes quite the investment to be able to windsurf whenever you want to. You need a different set of fins for heavy winds and light winds. You need a different board type if you’ll be attempting tricks than you’d use just to jet around for a while. Your sails can even change with the weather.
The upside to all this variation is it’s very simple to put together a basic set of windsurfing gear, and you can easily scale up from there to whatever level of investment you feel comfortable with. Simply get a basic board, a mast and boom assembly. Then add a sail, a harness, and you have yourself a basic set. It may not be the ideal set for all circumstances; in fact it’s pretty much guaranteed not to be. But to learn the ropes and get into windsurfing, it’ll be a great place to start.
